Apple Intelligence can be useful, but many iPhone users understandably want to know what happens to their information when they use new AI features.

Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks are handled directly on the device. More complex requests may use Private Cloud Compute, which is designed to process information without storing it or making it accessible to Apple.

However, Apple Intelligence is only one part of your privacy settings. Apps, Siri, iCloud, analytics and permissions can all affect what information leaves your iPhone.

Here are practical ways to take more control.

1. Review or turn off Apple Intelligence

On supported devices, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Review the available options and turn off Apple Intelligence if you do not want to use those features.

Turning off Apple Intelligence disables those features on the device, but it does not automatically turn off every Siri, iCloud or app-related data setting. Check those separately.

Settings can vary slightly depending on your iPhone model and iOS version, so review them again after major software updates.

2. Review Siri and Dictation

Siri and Dictation can process voice recordings, spoken requests and other information needed to respond to you. Look through the Siri settings and decide which features you actually use.

You can also review options relating to improving Siri and Dictation if you prefer not to share additional usage information for that purpose. Turning off Apple Intelligence does not necessarily turn off every Siri feature.

3. Check which apps can access your information

Open Settings > Privacy & Security and review the permissions given to your apps.

Pay particular attention to access for:

• Photos
• Contacts
• Location
• Microphone
• Camera
• Bluetooth
• Local network
• Calendars
• Files and folders

If an app no longer needs access, change the permission or remove it. You can also check App Privacy Report to see how apps have been using permissions and contacting domains.

4. Review analytics and improvements

Your iPhone includes settings for device analytics and improvements. These can usually be found under Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.

Review the available options and switch off any sharing you are not comfortable with. These settings are separate from Apple Intelligence, Siri and individual app permissions.

5. Consider stronger iCloud protection

If you store important photos, documents or backups in iCloud, review your iCloud security settings. Apple offers Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, which provides end-to-end encryption for additional categories of iCloud data.

Advanced Data Protection also means you need to take recovery options seriously. Make sure you understand the recovery requirements and have a trusted recovery method available before changing this setting.

6. Be careful with third-party AI apps

Apple Intelligence is not the only AI service that may process information. Before uploading photos, documents, messages or personal information to another AI app, check what information it collects, whether your data is used to improve its services, how long it is stored and whether you can delete it.

If you are unsure, avoid uploading sensitive information.

You do not have to stop using every modern iPhone feature to improve your privacy. The most useful steps are to review Apple Intelligence, Siri, app permissions, analytics and iCloud settings regularly.
